RMS CET 2026 Rashtriya Military School admission 2027-28: form till 20 October, exam on 13 December 2026, five schools

Written by the military school and Sainik School faculty at Atulya Defence Academy, Ambala Cantt. Details checked against the NTA notice for the Rashtriya Military Schools Common Entrance Test, September 2026.

The five Rashtriya Military Schools have a reputation that travels mostly by word of mouth in Army families: strict routine, English-medium teaching, small classes, and a long list of old boys who went on to wear the uniform. Admission to Class 6 and Class 9 for the 2027-28 session goes through one written paper, RMS CET 2026, conducted by the National Testing Agency on Sunday, 13 December 2026.

The form window is short and closes on 20 October 2026. This guide covers what a parent needs before that date and after it: who can apply, the fee, the pattern, how seats are shared between service and civilian families, and what happens after the written test.

Key dates: online form from 23 September to 20 October 2026 (5 pm); fee payment till 20 October, 11:50 pm; late form with an extra ₹500 from 21 to 25 October; written exam on 13 December 2026 in pen-and-paper OMR mode. Apply only at exams.nta.nic.in/rmscet.

When is the RMS CET 2026 exam?

The written test is on Sunday, 13 December 2026, for both Class 6 and Class 9. It is held in about 63 cities listed in the information bulletin, and candidates choose a city in the form. The reporting time and centre address will appear on the admit card, which NTA usually releases about ten days to two weeks before the exam.

What is the RMS CET exam date?

13 December 2026 is the RMS CET exam date for both classes. There is no second sitting, so a child who is unwell on that day loses the year's chance; plan travel to the centre a day early if it is far.

Which website is used for RMS CET applications?

Only the NTA portal, exams.nta.nic.in/rmscet. The schools' own websites carry information and later the interview schedule, but the RMS CET application form is filled and paid for on the NTA site. Ignore links shared on messaging apps that ask for payment anywhere else. For help, NTA lists the helpline numbers 011-40759000 and 011-69227700 in the notice.

Steps to apply

  1. Register with a mobile number and email the parent checks daily.
  2. Fill the child's details exactly as on the birth certificate, choose the class, category and exam city.
  3. Upload a recent photograph, signature and any category or service certificate asked for.
  4. Pay the fee online and download the confirmation page.

Application fee

  • General, OBC and OBC (non-creamy layer): ₹1,000
  • SC, ST and wards of defence personnel killed in action: ₹750

Payment is online by debit or credit card, net banking or UPI. The fee is not refunded.

Mistakes we see on these forms

  • Choosing "officer's ward" when the parent retired as a JCO, or the other way round. The category decides which seats the child competes for.
  • Picking a far exam city by accident from the drop-down list and finding out only when the admit card arrives.
  • Paying on the last evening and leaving the page before the bank confirms. Check that the confirmation page shows "fee paid".
  • Uploading a photo taken on a phone in poor light. Use a plain light background and a recent picture in which the face fills most of the frame.

Who can apply to RMS?

RMS CET eligibility depends on the date of birth and the class the child is in. Age is counted on 31 March 2027.

Class 6

Born between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2017 (10 to 13 years). The child should be in Class 5 in a recognised school in 2026-27.

Class 9

Born between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2014 (13 to 16 years). The child should be in Class 8 in 2026-27 and must pass it before admission.

Wards of soldiers killed in action get six months of relaxation in the upper age limit. Notice how the Class 6 window here is three years wide, while the Sainik School window is two. A child who is slightly too old for Class 6 in a Sainik School may still be eligible for RMS.

What is the age limit for RMS Class 6 and 9?

Class 6: 10 to 13 years on 31 March 2027. Class 9: 13 to 16 years on the same date. Both end dates of each window are included.

How many Rashtriya Military Schools are there?

There are five, all residential, English-medium and affiliated to CBSE, run under the Ministry of Defence:

  • Chail, Himachal Pradesh
  • Ajmer, Rajasthan
  • Dholpur, Rajasthan
  • Belgaum (Belagavi), Karnataka
  • Bengaluru, Karnataka

Which RMS is nearest to Punjab and Haryana?

The Chail school, in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, is the closest for families in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. From Ambala Cantt it is roughly a four-hour drive through Kalka and Kandaghat. The Ajmer and Dholpur schools in Rajasthan are the next options. Seat allotment is by merit and preference, so a child may be offered a school other than the first choice.

Can civilians get admission in RMS?

Yes. The schools were set up mainly for children of service personnel, and most seats are kept for wards of Junior Commissioned Officers and other ranks. A share of seats is open to wards of commissioned officers and to civilian children. Within these groups, seats are also reserved for SC and ST candidates as per government rules. Civilian children compete for a smaller number of seats, so the merit position needed is usually higher. The exact seat matrix for each school is published in the bulletin.

Are girls admitted?

Girls have been admitted to Class 6 at these schools in recent sessions. The number of girls' seats is limited and varies by school; check the bulletin for the 2027-28 seats before choosing the school preference.

Documents to keep ready

The form itself asks for very little, but the interview and admission stage asks for a lot, and families from service backgrounds often need certificates from a unit office that take time. Start collecting these now:

  • Birth certificate from the municipal body or registrar, matching the date in the form.
  • Bonafide certificate from the current school showing the class (5 or 8) and session.
  • For wards of serving or retired JCOs, other ranks and officers: a service certificate or discharge book copy, signed by the competent authority, in the format given in the bulletin.
  • Caste certificate for SC or ST candidates, from the competent authority.
  • For wards of personnel killed in action: the relevant certificate from the record office.
  • Recent passport-size photographs (keep six to eight).

A mismatch between the service certificate and the category chosen in the form is one of the most common reasons we see for an admission being held up. If you are not sure which category applies, ask the unit or record office before you submit, not after the result.

What is the RMS Class 6 exam pattern?

SubjectQuestionsMarksMinimum to qualify
English505035%
Intelligence505040%
Mathematics505040%
General Knowledge and Current Affairs505040%

The Class 6 paper has 200 questions for 200 marks, set in both Hindi and English. Unlike the Sainik School paper, all four subjects carry equal weight here, so GK and English cannot be treated as minor sections. A child must clear the minimum in every subject; a high maths score does not cover a failed English section.

The Class 9 paper is in English only, runs for two and a half hours, and covers English, Hindi, Social Science, Mathematics and Science across two papers. Section-wise detail for both classes is in our separate syllabus guides, coming up on this blog.

What happens after the written test?

Children who qualify in the written paper of the Rashtriya Military School admission 2027 process are called for an interview and a medical examination at the schools or designated centres. The interview checks communication, general awareness and confidence; for a ten-year-old it is a short, friendly conversation, but children who have never spoken to an unfamiliar adult in English can freeze. The final merit list combines the written score and the interview. A medical fitness certificate is required before admission.

What children are asked in the interview

From the mock interviews we hold for our own Class 5 and Class 8 students, the questions are simple and personal: name, school, family, hobbies, why the child wants to join a military school, a few lines about their home town, a current event they remember, and sometimes a short reading from an English book. What the panel notices is whether the child looks up, speaks in full sentences and stays calm when they do not know an answer. Practise this at home: ask your child to introduce themselves in English for one minute every evening for a month, and have a relative they do not see often ask them three or four questions. Children who have done this walk in relaxed; those who have not often go blank on the easiest question.

RMS ki taiyari kaise karein?

RMS ke paper me chaaron subject barabar number ke hain, isliye English aur GK ko utna hi samay dein jitna maths ko. Roz ek English passage, 20 reasoning ke sawal, 20 maths ke sawal aur 15 minute GK. Hafte me ek poora mock OMR sheet par, aur December se pehle kam se kam paanch purane paper.

A preparation plan for the next eight weeks

Weeks 1–2

Submit the form first. Then one diagnostic mock to find the weakest of the four subjects.

Weeks 3–5

Daily: 25 minutes each on English and maths, 15 on reasoning, 10 on GK. Weakest subject gets 15 minutes extra.

Weeks 6–7

Two full mocks a week on OMR sheets. Short English speaking practice for the interview.

Week 8

Revise mistakes only. Admit card printed, travel to the centre planned.

Military school or Sainik School: which to choose?

Neither is better for every child. The military schools are fewer and smaller, run directly under the Army, and keep most seats for service families. Sainik Schools are many more, spread across states, with a large home-state quota. Many families apply to both; the papers share much of their maths and reasoning, and the dates do not clash (the military school test on 13 December, the Sainik School entrance on 31 January). Our AISSEE 2027 timeline covers the second exam.
