Sainik School Age Limit 2027 for Class 6 and Class 9: Date of Birth Rules

Atulya Defence Academy 8 min read
Sainik School age limit 2027 for Class 6 and Class 9 with date of birth windows, age counted on 31 March 2027

Prepared by the admissions desk at Atulya Defence Academy, Ambala Cantt, where we check birth dates on entrance forms every season. Rules matched with the NTA information bulletin, October 2026.

Of all the reasons a child loses a Sainik School seat, the date of birth is the most painful, because nothing the child does can fix it. We have seen children clear the written paper, get a counselling call, and then be turned away at document verification because they were born a few weeks outside the allowed window. The rule is simple once you read it carefully. The trouble is that most parents read it as an age ("10 to 12 years") instead of as a pair of dates.

This guide explains the Sainik School age limit 2027 for both classes using exact dates, shows worked examples, and covers the cases parents ask us about most, including the twelve-year-old who seems to fit nowhere.

The rule in two lines: for Class 6, the child must be born between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2017. For Class 9, between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2014. Both dates are included. Age is counted on 31 March 2027.

What date of birth is eligible for AISSEE 2027 Class 6?

A child born on any date from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2017 can apply. The bulletin describes this as "10 to 12 years on 31 March 2027". Read that phrase carefully: it means the child must have turned 10 by that day and must not yet have turned 12. A child who turns 12 on or before 31 March 2027 is outside the window for the entry-level paper.

Sainik School Class 9 age limit

For Class 9, the child must be born between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2014, which works out to "13 to 15 years on 31 March 2027": turned 13 by that date and not yet 15. In addition, the child must have passed Class 8 from a recognised school at the time of admission. A child who is the right age but still in Class 7 cannot take a Class 9 seat.

Can a 12 year old apply for Sainik School?

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is: it depends on the birth date, not the age today. A child who is 11 now but turns 12 in, say, May 2027 was born in May 2015 and is eligible for Class 6. A child who already turned 12 before 31 March 2027 (born on or before 31 March 2015) is too old for Class 6.

That second child is also too young for Class 9 this year, because Class 9 needs a birth date on or before 31 March 2014. Children born between April 2014 and March 2015 fall in this gap for the 2027 cycle. They are not out of the race, though. One year later, in the January 2028 paper for the 2028-29 session, the Class 9 window should move forward to cover their birth year, and by then they will normally be finishing Class 8. If your child is in that gap, use the coming year to build a strong maths and English base for the Class 9 paper rather than trying to force a Class 6 form.

Is the age limit the same for boys and girls?

Yes. The same birth-date window applies to boys and girls, and to every category. There is no age relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, defence wards or girls. This is different from many government job exams, where reserved categories get extra years. Parents who are used to those rules sometimes assume the same here and apply with an ineligible date.

Sainik School date of birth criteria: documents that decide it

The age you type in the form is only a claim. It is proved at counselling with documents, and every one of them must show the same date.

  • Birth certificate issued by the municipal body, gram panchayat or Registrar of Births and Deaths. This is the main proof.
  • School record: the date of birth in the current school's admission register and on the bonafide certificate.
  • Aadhaar: should match, though it is supporting proof rather than the main document.

When the dates do not match

We see this every year. A birth certificate says one date, the school record says another, often because a date was changed at nursery admission. If the documents differ, the school can refuse admission. Fix it before applying: get the school record corrected against the birth certificate, with an affidavit if the school asks for one. Do this now, not after the result, because corrections in government records take weeks.

Also check the spelling of the child's name and both parents' names across all documents. A spelling mismatch does not make a child ineligible, but it slows verification at exactly the moment you want it to go smoothly.

How to check the age yourself in one minute

You do not need an online calculator. Take the birth date and ask two questions about 31 March 2027:

  1. Has the child had their 10th birthday on or before that day? (For the higher class, the 13th birthday.) If not, the child is too young this year.
  2. Has the child had their 12th birthday on or before that day? (For the higher class, the 15th.) If yes, the child is too old.

Two "correct" answers (yes to the first, no to the second) mean the child is within the Sainik School age limit 2027. Birthdays that fall on 1 April are the ones that confuse people: a child born on 1 April 2015 is still 11 on 31 March 2027 and therefore eligible, while a child born a day earlier is not.

Later years assume the current two-year window moves forward by one year each cycle, as it has in recent bulletins. Confirm in each year's notice.

Date-of-birth mistakes we see on forms

  • Typing the date in the American order (month first) and not noticing on the preview page.
  • Using the date from the school record when the birth certificate shows a different one.
  • Filling a younger sibling's details by mistake when both children are applying in different years.
  • Assuming that because the child is in Class 5 they must be eligible. Class and age are checked separately.

The correction window after the form closes allows some fields to be changed, but do not rely on it. Check the preview page line by line before paying.

Age rules at New Sainik Schools

New Sainik Schools admit through the same entrance and follow the same age windows for the seats filled through it. Children already studying in a partner school may be considered for that school's internal quota, but they still have to meet the Sainik School age limit 2027 and qualify in the paper.

Why the age window matters for preparation

The window also tells you how much time you have. A child born in early 2017 can take the Class 6 paper in January 2027 or wait a year and still be within the next window. A child born in mid-2015 gets only this one chance at Class 6. For that child, the January 2027 attempt deserves full effort: previous year papers, weekly mock tests on OMR sheets, and a study plan that puts maths first. Our Class 6 syllabus guide breaks down each section and how to divide study time.

Sunday, 31 January 2027, for both classes. The full schedule, including admit card and counselling, is in our AISSEE 2027 timeline.

What is the last date to apply for AISSEE 2027?

The closing date is printed in the information bulletin on exams.nta.ac.in/AISSEE. The form opened on 13 October 2026, and the window usually lasts around three weeks. How is the Sainik School merit list prepared?

Children who score at least 25 percent in each section and 40 percent overall are ranked school by school within the home-state and other-state shares, categories and the defence quota. Seats are then given through e-counselling, a medical test and document checks, where the birth date is verified.

Is coaching necessary for Sainik School?
