The JNV entrance for Class 6 is close now. The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test for the 2027-28 session will be held on Saturday, 28 November 2026, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Registration closed on 10 August 2026, so if your child applied, the only job left is JNVST 2027 preparation for the next few weeks.
This is the stretch where good preparation can still turn into wasted effort. Children either keep starting new chapters out of panic, or they slow down because "the syllabus is done". Neither helps. What works in the final month of JNVST 2027 preparation is narrower: fewer topics, more timed papers, and a lot of attention to the mistakes a child keeps repeating. Below is the plan we follow with our Class 5 batch in Ambala Cantt, adapted so a parent can run it at home.
In one line: JNVST 2027 is on 28 November 2026; 80 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, OMR sheet, no negative marking. Base your JNVST 2027 preparation in the last month on mental ability practice every day, two full mocks a week, and a short error notebook.
When is the JNVST 2027 exam?
The Navodaya exam 2027 for Class 6 is fixed for 28 November 2026 for schools in the summer-bound and winter-bound groups listed in the notification, which covers Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and most of north India. Reporting time is printed on the admit card; children are usually asked to arrive by about 10:00 am. The test begins at 11:30 am sharp.
What is the JNVST exam pattern?
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mental Ability Test | 40 | 50 | 60 minutes |
| Arithmetic Test | 20 | 25 | 30 minutes |
| Language Test | 20 | 25 | 30 minutes |
| Total | 80 | 100 | 2 hours |
All questions are multiple choice and marked on an OMR sheet. There is no negative marking, so no bubble should be left empty at the end. Children with a disability get 30 extra minutes. The paper is available in English, Hindi and the regional languages listed by NVS; the language chosen in the form is the one your child gets.
The mental ability section is not like school maths. It has ten types of figure-based questions: odd one out, figure matching, pattern completion, figure series, analogy, geometrical figure completion, mirror images, punched-hole patterns, space visualisation and embedded figures. These look easy and are easy once a child has seen hundreds of them. A child who has not practised them will lose time trying to "think" through each one.
Who is eligible for Navodaya Class 6?
- Born between 1 May 2015 and 31 July 2017 (both dates included). This applies to all categories, including SC and ST.
- Studying in Class 5 during 2026-27 in a government or government-recognised school in the same district where the JNV is located.
- Must have studied and passed Class 3 and Class 4 in a recognised school.
- Only one attempt is allowed in a lifetime. A child who has written this test before cannot sit again.
Can a student apply to JNV outside the home district?
No. The form is accepted only for the JNV of the district where the child is studying Class 5, and residence proof from that district is checked at admission. This is why moving a child to a school in another district just to try for that district's JNV usually fails at document verification.
How does the Navodaya rural quota work?
At least 75 percent of seats in a district are filled by children from rural areas. To claim the rural quota, a child must have studied Class 3, Class 4 and Class 5 for full sessions in schools located in rural areas. Even one year in an urban school moves the child into the open seats. One-third of seats are for girls, seats for SC and ST follow the district's population share, and OBC reservation of 27 percent follows the central list.
The four-week JNVST 2027 preparation plan before 28 November
Find the gaps
Give one full paper on a Sunday in exactly 2 hours, starting at 11:30 am like the real test. Mark it and note every wrong or skipped question by type. That list is the syllabus for the next three weeks.
Fix the weak types
Daily: 40 mental ability questions on the two weakest types, 10 arithmetic questions, one reading passage. Two full papers this week, on Wednesday and Sunday.
Speed and accuracy
Two more full papers. Target: finish the mental ability section in 50 minutes so 10 minutes are left to check. Practise filling the OMR sheet with a ball pen.
Light revision
One last mock on Monday, then only the error notebook and short sets. No new topics. Sleep by 9:30 pm from Wednesday onward.
Arithmetic: what to revise
The arithmetic section has 20 questions from Class 5 level maths. The topics that keep coming back are number system and place value, the four operations on whole numbers, factors and multiples, LCM and HCF, fractions and decimals, measurement of length, mass, volume and time, simple interest, profit and loss, percentage, perimeter and area, and data from bar graphs. In the last month, do not reteach a topic from scratch. Pick the three topics with the most errors in the first mock and give them 20 minutes a day.
Language: what to revise
The language test has four reading passages with five questions each. There is no grammar list to memorise. What helps is reading one short passage daily and answering questions on it within six minutes. Ask your child to underline the line in the passage that gives each answer. That habit stops guesswork.
Navodaya class 6 mock test: how to use it properly
A mock paper is only half useful in JNVST 2027 preparation if nobody studies the answers afterwards. Use this routine:
- Same time and conditions as the real test: 11:30 am start, one table, no breaks except a short one if the child needs the washroom.
- Use a printed OMR sheet. Many children who score well in a notebook drop marks when they have to shade bubbles.
- Mark the paper the same evening, not days later.
- The next day, spend 45 minutes only on wrong answers. Write each mistake type in the notebook with one solved example.
- Track scores section-wise in a small table on the fridge. Children like seeing the line go up.
Past papers from earlier years are the best mocks. NVS sample papers and past papers show the real level; many printed "guess papers" are either too easy or too hard.
What should a child revise in the last week before JNVST?
- The error notebook, two times over.
- One set of 10 questions from each of the ten mental ability types, daily, timed.
- Formulas for area, perimeter, percentage and simple interest on one sheet.
- Nothing new. A new topic in the final week shakes confidence more than it adds marks.
JNVST last month tips for the exam day
- Keep the admit card, a photo ID if asked, two blue or black ball pens, and a water bottle ready the night before.
- Eat a normal breakfast. Avoid trying new food on the morning of the test.
- Start with the section your child finds easiest, if the rules allow, and shade answers as you go rather than at the end.
- At 1:15 pm, fill every remaining bubble. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
Where to download the JNVST 2027 admit card?
NVS will release the admit card on navodaya.gov.in a few weeks before the test, usually in early November. Log in with the registration number and date of birth. Check the child's name, photo, exam centre and reporting time, and report any error to the district JNV principal at once. Print two copies and keep one in the school bag.
What is the JNVST cut off?
NVS does not publish one national cut off. Selection is district-wise: each district's seats are filled in merit order within the rural, urban, gender and category groups. A score that gets a seat in one district may not be enough in a district with more applicants. As a working target, children in our batches aim for 75 or more out of 100 in the final mocks; that gives a cushion on exam day.
When will the Navodaya result come?
For the 28 November test, the result is expected around March to April 2027 on navodaya.gov.in, with the district-wise list also sent to JNVs and district education offices. Selected children are called for document verification. A waiting list may follow if seats stay vacant.
Navodaya ki taiyari kaise karein? A short note for parents
Last mahine me naya syllabus mat shuru karein. Roz mental ability ke sawaal, hafte me do poore mock test, aur galtiyon ki copy, bas itna kaafi hai. Bachche ko daantne ke bajay har mock ke baad uski sabse badi galti par hi baat karein.
How our Ambala Cantt batch handles JNVST 2027 preparation
At Atulya, Class 5 children prepare for JNV, Sainik School and RMS together because the three papers share most of their maths and reasoning. In the weeks before the JNV test, the batch writes a full mock every Wednesday and Sunday on OMR sheets, and teachers go through each child's sheet the next morning. If you want your child to sit a mock in exam conditions before 28 November, our mock test schedule has the dates, and the JNV preparation page explains the full course.
